Tisbury Town Beach (also officially designated on many town maps as Owen Little Way Beach) is a quiet, local harbor beach located at 34 Owen Little Way, Vineyard Haven, MA 02568.
Tucked right next to the Vineyard Haven Yacht Club, it sits on the protected waters of Vineyard Haven's inner harbor. It offers a completely different experience than the rolling surf of the south shore, favoring a tranquil, neighborhood atmosphere with an up-close look at the island's bustling maritime culture.
1. Landscape & Swim Conditions
Because it sits tucked well inside the harbor, Tisbury Town Beach is shielded from heavy winds and open-ocean swells.
-
The Water: The conditions here are remarkably calm, clear, and essentially wave-free. Because it consists of a shallow coastal shelf inside a protected harbor basin, the water warms up much faster than the ocean side, making it highly comfortable for wading, casual swimming, and floating.
-
The Harbor Views: The beach functions as an excellent front-row seat to Vineyard Haven's active boat traffic. Sitting on the sand, you can watch the Steamship Authority ferries glide past, catch glimpses of the famous tall ships operated by The Black Dog, and watch local sailors from the neighboring yacht club navigate the inner harbor.
2. Amenities & Logistics
True to its nature as a small, neighborhood landing, the amenities are streamlined and focused on simple recreation:
-
Swim Platform: The town maintains a seasonal swim raft/platform anchored just offshore, complete with a ladder for swimmers to climb aboard and jump off.
-
Gear Storage: The beach features a public dinghy rack storage area, which is heavily utilized by local boaters coming ashore from the inner harbor mooring fields.
-
Facilities: The beach is generally a "carry-in, carry-out" facility. While it features a picnic bench and a small grassy edge, it lacks permanent indoor public restrooms or changing facilities. (Note: Full public restrooms, a playground, and an open-air rinse shower are located just a short walk down Main Street at Owen Park Beach).
-
Accessibility: The beach provides standard wheelchair access paths to the edge of the sand.
3. Parking & Seasonal Rules
-
Free Parking: Unlike many island destinations that require expensive daily passes or resident-only stickers, parking at Tisbury Town Beach is entirely free and open to the public.
-
Limited Capacity: The trade-off for free parking is space. The gravel area at the end of Owen Little Way is exceptionally small, with room for only a handful of vehicles. Because it is shared with boaters and yacht club traffic, the spaces fill up very early on hot summer days. If the lot is full, visitors typically drop off gear and find legal on-street parking along Main Street.
-
No Sticker Required: You do not need a Tisbury resident beach sticker to use the beach or park in the designated open spaces.
