Sunken Meadow Beach is one of Eastham's hidden gems on the warm, calm shores of Cape Cod Bay.
1. The Tidal Experience & Landscape
Like all Cape Cod Bay beaches, Sunken Meadow is entirely dictated by the six-hour tidal cycle, providing two distinctly beautiful landscapes:
High Tide: The water is remarkably calm, clean, and completely devoid of heavy surf, undertow, or big waves. The bay acts as a shallow shelf, allowing the sun to warm the water into the upper 60s and low 70s by mid-summer—making it fantastic for casual swimming, floating, or wading.
Low Tide: When the tide recedes, it exposes vast, shimmering wet sand flats that stretch far out into the bay. Unlike some bay beaches that turn muddy or marshy, Sunken Meadow is known for its firmer, harder sand flats.
This makes it an exceptional spot for long, quiet walks, beach games, and exploring shallow tide pools for hermit crabs and minnows. The Sunsets: Facing due west across the bay, it is a premier location for catching dramatic Cape Cod sunsets.
At low tide, the wet sand bars mirror the evening sky, reflecting deep pinks, purples, and golds.
2. The Atmosphere
Sunken Meadow is intensely peaceful and maintains a low-key, rustic neighborhood vibe. It never feels overrun or excessively loud. The natural restriction on crowd size comes entirely down to its infrastructure: the public parking lot is extremely small, accommodating only about 10 to 15 vehicles depending on sand drifts.
3. Amenities & Practical Info
This is a more rustic, "carry-in, carry-out" style beach designed for a pure day by the water rather than major commercial convenience.
Lifeguards: There are no lifeguards stationed at Sunken Meadow Beach; swimming is entirely at your own risk.
Restrooms: The town provides public restroom facilities (typically a seasonal portable restroom/porta-potty) near the parking area.
Accessibility: The beach features a short, flat transition from the lot to the sand, making it easily accessible and eliminating the steep dune stairs found at outer ocean beaches.
Concessions: There are no permanent snack shacks or food vendors on-site, though the local ice cream truck is known to roll through the area on hot summer days.
Dogs: To protect the beach environment and visitors, pets are strictly prohibited on the sand from June 15th through Labor Day.
4. Parking Permits & Regulations
Sticker Required: An Eastham Town Beach Sticker is strictly required to park in the lot from mid-June through Labor Day.
No Daily Passes at the Gate: Unlike a few of Eastham's larger bay beaches, daily parking passes are not sold at the gate for Sunken Meadow because the lot is too small.
Visitors must buy weekly, two-week, or seasonal visitor passes ahead of time. These can be purchased through the Eastham Recreation & Beach Department (located at the Natural Resources building on Old Orchard Road) or via the town's online portal.
