South Cape Beach
South Cape Beach is a large and popular beach in Mashpee, MA, offering a unique setting as it is part of the South Cape Beach State Park and the Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve. The beach itself is a mile-long stretch of white sand on Nantucket Sound, known for its soft sand, gentle waves, and beautiful views. A key thing to know about this beach is that it has two distinct sections with different management and parking rules: a State Beach area and a Town Beach area.

Parking Information

  • State Beach Parking Lot:
  • A daily fee is required to park, which can be paid via the MA DCR YODEL APP.
  • The fee is typically $14 for Massachusetts residents and $40 for non-residents (prices are subject to change).
  • A Massachusetts State Parks annual pass is also valid here.
  • Town Beach Parking Lot:
  • This lot requires a town-issued pass.
  • A weekly pass can be purchased by visitors for around $50.
  • This pass is also valid at other Mashpee town beaches, such as Attaquin Park and John's Pond.
  • The town parking lot is smaller and tends to fill up quickly.

Facilities and Amenities

  • Lifeguards: South Cape Beach is an unguarded beachfront, so swimming is at your own risk.
  • Restrooms: Both the State and Town beach areas have restrooms. The State beach area has handicap-accessible restrooms.
  • Accessibility: The State Beach has a boardwalk that leads to a viewing platform, and beach wheelchairs (Mobi-mats) are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Recreation: The park offers facilities for hiking and walking, as it is part of the Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve. The area is also popular for fishing, and interpretive programs are offered during the summer months.
  • Dogs: Dogs are not allowed on the beach from April 1st to September 30th. They are also not allowed in the parking areas during the summer season.
