Nauset Light Beach
This spectacular beach is part of The National Sea Shore. The surf here can be very strong at times and swimming is sometimes prohibited. Don't forget to visit the beaches namesake 'Nauset Light'.

Nauset Light Beach in Eastham is one of the crown jewels of the Cape Cod National Seashore. Named after the iconic red-and-white lighthouse that stands watch from the bluffs above, this expansive ocean-side beach perfectly captures the wild, high-energy spirit of the Outer Cape’s "Back Side."

1. Landscape & The Descent

The beach is backed by steep, towering glacial scars and sand bluffs that drop sharply down to the Atlantic Ocean.

  • The View: Standing at the top of the overlook by the parking lot provides a breathtaking, uninterrupted panoramic view of the open ocean.

  • The Path Down: To reach the sand, visitors walk down a long, hard-packed gravel and sand path cut into the face of the bluff. While the path is well-maintained and technically wheelchair accessible, pulling heavy carts or carrying oversized gear back up the incline at the end of the day requires some effort.

  • Erosion: This coastline is highly dynamic. Strong winter storms routinely alter the width of the beach and reshape the bluffs, occasionally exposing fields of smooth ocean rocks along the shoreline before the summer sands shift back in.

2. Surf, Wildlife, & Recreation

  • Atlantic Surf: Facing the open ocean, Nauset Light is a premier destination for bodyboarding, surfing, and heavy-surf swimming. The water temperatures are notoriously brisk—rarely breaking out of the mid-60s even in the dead of summer—but the excellent wave action draws crowds all season long.

  • Active Seal Populations: Gray seals are an absolute fixture here. They routinely swim just past the breakers in large groups, keeping a close eye on the beach. Because of their heavy presence, the National Park Service strictly enforces shark safety guidelines, and warning flags are standard fixtures on the beach.

  • Surfcasting: Late in the evening and early in the morning, the beach is popular among surfcasters targetting striped bass running along the deep ocean troughs.

3. Deep Historical Roots

The bluffs surrounding the beach are steeped in maritime history, showcasing Cape Cod's centuries-long battle against coastal erosion:

  • Nauset Lighthouse: The famous 48-foot cast-iron tower overlooking the beach was originally built in Chatham in 1877 as one of a twin pair before being moved to Eastham in 1923. It was originally completely white, but the top half was painted its signature red in the 1940s to serve as a better daytime landmark for ships. By the early 1990s, relentless erosion brought the cliff edge just 37 feet from the tower. In November 1996, the community rallied, and the entire lighthouse was successfully moved in one piece 336 feet back across the road to safety.

  • The Three Sisters: A short, wooded walk just 1,000 feet west of the parking lot leads to a small clearing containing the "Three Sisters of Nauset." These are three petite, wooden lighthouses built in 1892 to replace the original 1838 brick towers. They were placed in a trio because mariners navigating the treacherous shoreline identified the area specifically by spotting three separate lights.

4. Amenities & Logistics

  • National Park Pass Required: Because this is a federal beach managed by the National Park Service, standard Town of Eastham beach stickers are not valid here. Access requires a Cape Cod National Seashore daily vehicle pass ($25), an annual Seashore pass ($60), or any federal America the Beautiful interagency pass.

  • Facilities: The National Park Service maintains a permanent facility at the top of the bluff providing restrooms, indoor changing rooms, outdoor rinse-off showers, and a water bottle-filling station.

  • Lifeguards: Professional National Seashore lifeguards are seasonally stationed on a designated stretch of the beach from late June through Labor Day weekend.

  • The Parking Lot Factor: The paved parking lot sits right at the base of the lighthouse path. However, it is relatively small for such a famous destination. During peak summer days, the lot almost always fills completely by 9:30 AM to 10:00 AM. Once full, rangers implement a one-car-in, one-car-out system.

Pro Tip: If you can't arrive first thing in the morning, aim for a "second shift" arrival around 2:30 PM or 3:00 PM. By mid-afternoon, the morning crowd begins to pack up and head home, routinely opening up prime parking spaces just as the peak heat of the day softens.
