Nauset Beach
This 10-mile stretch of sandy beach offers swimming & fishing, plus surfing in non-protected areas. Beautiful sunrises, excellent bass and blues fishing, surfing, sunbathing, swimming in cool ocean waters. Despite its size, the massive parking lot occasionally fills up when the sun is strong. Arrive early or in the late afternoon if you want to claim a spot. The beach is open to off-road vehicles with a special permit. Attendant on duty. Really long beach. Very popular. Great waves. All ages. Nice sand. A bit of a walk from parking over dune. Slightly steep down to beach. Bike rack. Popular Nauset Beach, not to be confused with Nauset Light Beach of the National Seashore, is a lengthy 10-mile expanse starting in Orleans stretching all the way to Chatham. Surfing is permitted in the non- protected beach areas from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. It is also popular with swimmers and boogie boarders. The beach is also available for off-road vehicles with the proper permit.

Nauset Beach in Orleans is one of the most famous, expansive, and high-energy stretches of coastline on Cape Cod. Spanning 10 miles from Orleans down to the edge of Chatham, it represents the starting point of the Cape’s vast "Back Side" ocean shoreline. It is universally loved for its big Atlantic surf, wide-open sandy expanses, and lively summer culture.

1. Landscape & Dynamic Coastline

Unlike the steep, 50-foot clay and sand bluffs found further north in Wellfleet, Nauset Beach is backed by a massive, rolling system of low sand dunes held together by hardy beach grass.

  • The Shoreline: The beach itself is incredibly wide, offering plenty of room even on peak summer days. Because it directly faces the open ocean, the shoreline is heavily shaped by the tides, creating sandbars that shift continuously throughout the year.

  • A Changing Coast: Nauset is on the front lines of Atlantic coastal erosion. Over the last decade, heavy winter storms have rapidly reshaped the beach, famously claiming the old Liam’s clam shack in 2018 and forcing the town to move its beach facilities and main structures back away from the shifting dune line.

2. Activities & Beach Culture

  • Surfing and Swimming: Nauset is a legendary spot for bodyboarding, surfing, and swimming, thanks to its consistently powerful ocean waves. The water stays brisk—rarely climbing past the mid-60s even in August—but the excellent waves make it a premier destination for anyone looking for serious ocean action.

  • The Off-Road Vehicle (ORV) Trails: One of Nauset's most defining features is its extensive Over-Sand Vehicle trail system. With a special town permit and the proper four-wheel-drive equipment, fishers and beachgoers can air down their tires and drive miles down the outer beach towards Chatham to find completely isolated spots.

  • Fishing and Wildlife: The southern spit of Nauset is a world-class destination for surfcasting, especially at night when striped bass move into the shallows. Like the Wellfleet beaches, gray seals are incredibly abundant here, often swimming close to shore in large numbers.

3. Food & Amenities

Nauset offers excellent amenities compared to more rustic outer beaches. The town has built modern, elevated restroom and shower facilities to replace what was lost to erosion.

The food scene here is an essential part of the experience. The iconic "Liam's at Nauset Beach" (famous for its onion rings) may be gone, but the town has preserved the tradition by hosting a rotating lineup of popular local food trucks right at the edge of the parking area, serving everything from lobster rolls and fried seafood to ice cream and gourmet snacks during the season.

4. Seasonal Access & Logistics

  • Town vs. Federal: While Nauset Beach connects directly to the Cape Cod National Seashore further north, the main beach and parking lot are owned and operated by the Town of Orleans. National Park passes are not accepted here.

  • Passes: During the summer season, a vehicle pass is required. Visitors can purchase daily parking passes at the gate, or opt for weekly/seasonal town beach stickers.

Note on Names: Don't confuse Nauset Beach in Orleans with Nauset Light Beach in Eastham. While they sit on the same continuous stretch of ocean sand, Nauset Light Beach is located a few miles north, features the famous red-and-white lighthouse, and is managed by the National Park Service.
