Jetty Beach
Set on the warm waters of the Vineyard Sound, the north-facing Jetty Beach has very low surf and is ideal for young children. The beach is located on East Chop, across the entrance of the Oak Bluffs Harbor from the Island Queen ferry landing. Enjoy views across the Sound to Cape Cod and pleasure boats, fishing vessels, and ferries in between.

The Jetty Beach (frequently referred to by locals simply as "Jetty Beach") is a highly accessible, family-friendly town beach located in Oak Bluffs on Martha's Vineyard. Situated at the end of East Chop Drive, it wraps around the northern side of the entrance to Oak Bluffs Harbor, offering a fantastic blend of calm water swimming and excellent boat-watching.

1. The Water & Landscape

Because it sits tucked along Vineyard Sound right at the mouth of the protected harbor, Jetty Beach escapes the rough, punishing surf found on the island's south shore.

  • Calm & Clear: The water here is exceptionally gentle, shallow, and virtually wave-free, making it an absolute favorite for families with young children, casual floaters, and toddlers.

  • The Giant Jetty: The defining feature of the beach is the massive stone breakwater/jetty that extends out into the Sound to protect the harbor channel. Visitors love to walk out along the rocks, look for small crabs in the crevices, or fish right off the rocks.

  • Front-Row Boat Watching: Positioned directly adjacent to the harbor channel, the beach provides an unyielding view of Martha's Vineyard maritime life. Sitting on your beach blanket, you can watch sleek yachts, local fishing boats, catamarans, and the giant Steamship Authority ferries glide past all day long.

2. The Atmosphere & Convenience

Jetty Beach strikes a perfect middle ground between the bustling, high-energy vibe of nearby Inkwell Beach and total seclusion. It has a classic, relaxed New England town-beach feel.

Its greatest asset is its proximity to downtown Oak Bluffs. Located under a mile from the ferry terminals and Circuit Avenue, it is easily reachable via a short, flat bike ride or a scenic 10-to-15-minute walk past the historic gingerbread cottages and along the harbor waterfront. This makes it an incredibly convenient "stop-off" spot if you are just visiting the island for the day and don't have a vehicle.

3. Amenities & Logistics

  • Facilities: True to its neighborhood layout, amenities directly on the sand are minimal. It is largely a "carry-in, carry-out" beach. There are no permanent indoor bathhouses or concession stands on-site, though its close proximity to the harbor means restaurants, snack bars, and shops are just a short walk away.

  • Lifeguards: The town of Oak Bluffs does not routinely station lifeguards at Jetty Beach; swimming is at your own risk.

  • Accessibility: The walk from the road to the water is short and flat, skipping any steep dune inclines or grueling staircases.

4. Parking & Regulations

  • Free Roadside Parking: Unlike many island beaches that require expensive resident stickers or paid parking lots, parking near Jetty Beach along East Chop Drive is entirely free.

  • Limited Spaces: Because the parking is limited to parallel roadside spaces along the edge of East Chop Drive, it can fill up completely on gorgeous summer afternoons. If you are driving, arriving before 10:30 AM or waiting until the late afternoon turnaround is your best bet.

  • No Pass Required: No beach stickers or town passes are required to visit or sit on the beach.
