Head of the Meadow Beach
Head of the Meadow Beach is owned by both the town and National Seashore. Good beach for families with smaller children.

Head of the Meadow Beach in Truro is one of the most intriguing and visually distinct destinations on the Outer Cape. Located near the North Truro and Provincetown border, it features a unique "split personality" dynamic and a legendary history that makes it a favorite for nature lovers, history buffs, and surfers alike.

1. The Unique "Two Beaches" Setup

The most notable logistical quirk of Head of the Meadow is that it is actually two separate beaches sitting side-by-side, sharing the same stretch of sand but managed by different entities:

  • The Town Side: Managed by the Town of Truro, requiring a valid Truro town beach sticker during the summer season.

  • The Federal Side: Managed by the Cape Cod National Seashore, accepting daily federal parking fees or National Park passes.

Each side has its own dedicated parking lot and access path, but once your feet hit the sand, they merge into one massive, seemingly endless expanse of pristine Atlantic shoreline.

2. The Landscape: Shifting Sandbars & "The Ocean Graveyard"

Because it faces the open Atlantic, the beach is dynamic, wild, and heavily shaped by powerful ocean currents.

  • The Sandbars: Head of the Meadow is famous for its dramatic offshore sandbar system. At low tide, these bars create a fascinating network of shallow, warm wading pools right on the ocean side. However, these same sandbars create unpredictable, heavy surf and strong undertows at high tide, making it highly popular for experienced bodyboarders and surfers.

  • Shipwreck Territory: Those shifting sandbars earned this stretch of the Outer Cape the nickname "The Ocean Graveyard." Over the past few centuries, more than 1,000 shipwrecks have been recorded along the Back Side of the Cape. Head of the Meadow is home to one of the most famous visible wrecks: the Frances, a German steel barque that sank during a massive nor'easter in December 1872. The ship sits just a few hundred feet offshore in about 20 feet of water. On exceptionally low tides, the rusted top of her iron boiler can still be seen breaking through the surf.

3. Wildlife & Recreation

  • Seal Colony Activity: Just like Truro's other ocean beaches, gray seals are incredibly abundant here. You will frequently spot large groups swimming just past the breaking waves. Because of this heavy marine mammal presence, the National Seashore strictly posts shark advisory signs and safety flags throughout the summer.

  • The Bike Trail: Directly behind the dunes of the National Seashore parking lot sits the trailhead for the Head of the Meadow Bicycle Trail. This scenic, paved 2-mile path winds through a unique landscape of salt marshes, low sand dunes, and stands of pitch pine, connecting the beach directly to High Head Road.

4. Amenities & Logistics

  • Facilities: The National Seashore side features a permanent facility providing public restrooms, changing rooms, and outdoor rinse showers. The Truro town side relies on seasonal portable restrooms (porta-potties).

  • Safety: Both the town and federal sections are seasonally staffed with professional lifeguards during peak summer daytime hours.

  • The Accessibility Advantage: Unlike the daunting 50-foot cliffs and steep staircases at beaches like Marconi or Nauset Light, the dunes at Head of the Meadow are relatively low and rolling. The paths from both parking lots to the sand are flat and manageable, making it much easier to wheel down coolers, surfboards, and heavy beach carts.

  • Parking Capacity: Because there are two distinct, large lots available, Head of the Meadow is often a highly reliable backup option on hot summer days when smaller Truro and Wellfleet ocean lots fill to capacity early in the morning.
