Great Pond Beach
A beautiful, sandy bottom 'kettle pond' formed by the glaciers. Crystal clear fresh water, it's a wonderful place for kids to have fun in calm, warm water. Small beach, limited parking. Eastham parking permit required during summer months. Across the pond is Wiley Park -- a swimming area with docks, restrooms and parking, but a small shady beach area.

Great Pond Beach is a beautiful, serene freshwater swimming area located on the eastern shore of Great Pond, one of Eastham's largest and most popular glacial kettle ponds. Offering an entirely different vibe from the rolling waves of the Atlantic or the vast tidal flats of Cape Cod Bay, it is highly favored by families, lap swimmers, and small boaters for its exceptionally calm, clear, and warm waters.

1. Landscape & Swim Environment

The beach features a modest but lovely sandy shoreline nestled against a backdrop of mature pine trees, providing a classic New England lake setting.

  • The Water: Because it is a completely enclosed freshwater pond, there are no ocean currents, undertows, or big waves to contend with. The shallow margins stay remarkably warm by mid-summer, making it a stress-free spot for young children to splash around and play in the sand.

  • Roped Swim Zone: The town sets up a clearly designated, roped-off swimming area to ensure a safe boundary for swimmers. Unlike most of Eastham's rustic saltwater town beaches, Great Pond Beach is one of the few locations that is seasonally protected by lifeguards.

2. Boating & Fishing

Great Pond is a hub for quiet, non-motorized water sports. Directly adjacent to the swimming area, the town maintains a dedicated public boat ramp/launch right-of-way.

  • Paddling: This is a premier spot in town to launch kayaks, canoes, and stand-up paddleboards. On clear summer afternoons, it is very common to see small Sunfish sailboats drifting across the water.

  • Fishing: The pond is a healthy, fertile fishery. Anglers regularly visit the quieter coves of the lake to target largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, chain pickerel, and yellow perch.

3. Practical Logistics & Amenities

Compared to its sister beach, Wiley Park (which sits directly across on the western side of Great Pond and boasts a large playground, hiking trails, and full public restrooms), Great Pond Beach is a slightly more streamlined, quiet facility.

  • Amenities: The site includes a standard public boat ramp and seasonal portable restrooms (porta-potties). There are no permanent snack bars or food concessions, but the local ice cream trucks make frequent rounds to the parking lot during hot days.

  • Parking Logistics: The parking area consists of roughly 60+ spaces lining Great Pond Road right at the edge of the sand, which makes carrying coolers, chairs, and boat gear to the water incredibly easy.

  • Passes & Stickers: Great Pond Beach is a sticker-only beach from mid-June through Labor Day. There is no attendant on-site selling daily passes. To park here, you must display a valid Eastham Town Beach Sticker (Resident or Visitor). Note: While daily passes are not sold here, if you buy a daily town pass across the pond at Wiley Park, it is legally valid for use at Great Pond Beach as well.

  • Pets: To protect water quality and beachgoers, dogs are strictly forbidden on the beach and in the water from June 15th through Labor Day.
