While Wychmere Harbor is the refined "postcard" of Harwich Port, Saquatucket Harbor is its vibrant, beating heart. Located just a mile down the road, Saquatucket offers a different kind of Cape Cod magic—one defined by the salt of the sea, the hum of diesel engines, and the bustling energy of a true municipal port.
If Wychmere is where you go to admire the view, Saquatucket is where you go to get out on the water.
A Harbor of Opportunity
Unlike its neighbor, Saquatucket Harbor as we know it is a relatively modern creation. For a long time, the area was largely marshland and tidal creeks. It wasn't until the mid-1960s that the town of Harwich undertook a massive dredging project to create a deep-water municipal marina.
The goal was simple but ambitious: create a space that could accommodate both the growing interest in recreational boating and the town’s storied commercial fishing fleet.
The Fleet and the Fare
Saquatucket is unique because it balances three distinct worlds perfectly:
-
Commercial Fishing: This is one of the best places on the Lower Cape to see real-deal lobster boats and scallopers unloading their catch. The sight of colorful buoys stacked high on the decks is a reminder of the Cape's primary industry.
-
Passenger Ferries: For many, Saquatucket is the gateway to the islands. The Freedom Ferry operates out of this harbor, whisking travelers across the sound to Nantucket.
-
Charter Adventures: Whether you’re looking for a deep-sea fishing excursion or a seal-watching tour, this is the Cape’s premier departure point.
The 2019 Transformation
In recent years, Saquatucket has undergone a "glow-up" that has made it a destination in its own right, even for those without a boat. The 2019 land-side renovations introduced:
-
The Snack Shack: A local favorite for grabbing a lobster roll or a cup of chowder while sitting on the boardwalk.
-
The Artisan Market: During the summer months, local makers sell their wares in charming seaside shacks, turning the harbor into a community hub.
-
Improved Walkability: New boardwalks and seating areas allow visitors to stroll the perimeter and watch the boats come through the jetty.
A Sunset Tradition
There is a local secret about Saquatucket: it is arguably the best spot in Harwich to watch the sun go down. Because the harbor opens wide to the south and west, the sky turns brilliant shades of orange and violet, silhouetting the masts of the sailboats against the Vineyard Sound.
Local Tip: Grab a bench near the harbor master’s office around 6:00 PM. You'll catch the "golden hour" light hitting the returning fishing boats—it’s a scene that hasn't changed much in sixty years.
